What to Wear and Why
An exclusive extract from my new book, your guilt free guide to enjoying fashion.
Has fashion forgotten about sustainability? Or is it just something that has migrated to the compliance division, disappearing behind lawyers and finance people, whose job it is to tick boxes and maximise profits? Has it been lost from brand storytelling?
We can’t let this happen. We have to let our industry know that where something comes from, how it is made, is of the utmost importance to us.
In one month’s time my book will be published. It is designed to help us consumers make good decisions when it comes to fashion, to be responsible fashion citizens and spotlight some of the amazing designers, brands and makers who are showing the industry what good looks like.
Today, I wanted to give you an extract from the introduction of the book. You can order an advance copy of the book here, or better still, come and here me speak in New York on September 5th with Vanessa Barboni Hallik and Elizabeth Way (tickets are free but you do need to sign up). I will also be in Miami and Washington in the days following, more details on these dates next week. In the meantime, enjoy the first extract and let me know what you think. This is meant to be a conversation starter, and the more conversations we have, the better informed we will become.
What to Wear and Why
What are you wearing right now?
Are you reading this in a city, amongst the hum and buzz of people, cars, trains and buses? Perhaps you are on the subway, travelling home in your workwear. Or perhaps you are tucked up in bed, sheets silky on your skin, your favourite pyjamas keeping you cosy. Maybe you are out in the countryside, where you can see the sun, sky and earth around you, a soft cotton day dress flapping around your ankles. Do you love what you are wearing? Does it make you look and feel good?
Now, without looking at the labels, do you know what the clothes you are wearing are made of? Do you know what country they came from? Who made them?
