Not all 3 were peaceful rulers, but I don't think that detracts at all from your point about their patronage of the arts. It was refreshing to find this in my inbox this morning, giving credit where credit is due! India still has amazing artisans who should be recognized as more than just cheap labor.
And there are brands seeking to popularize that too, harnessing the Indian craftsmanship with a western distribution network. Hartwick Atelier is a new one, as is menswear brand SMR Days
With the historical references that you mention here, do you ever wonder what legacy in the form of architecture (temples, palaces, graves, etc) and art we are leaving behind us? Will they still be here to be admired in 200 years? What about 500 or 1,000 years. Are we able to create something as enduring as the pyramids?
I mean, Zara Hadid, Anthony Gormley, that massive crater in Arizona from James Turrell? Anish Kapoor? Norman Foster? Richard Rogers? It's hard to think of a single iconic building other than the shard or Sydney opera house - not exactly Notre Dame!
Will they last that long? Will they pass the test of time? I wish! Certainly the Sydney opera house. But do you really think it will still be there in 300 years?
I’ve had this same thought when it comes to architecture! I’m sure there is something current that will endure, but it doesn’t seem that we create beautiful architecture like we once did?

Great post! I’m curious to see how things change at Dior with Jonathan Anderson at the helm.
It's exciting to see. I hope he is given control of the supply chain aswell as the creative. He had absolute control of everything at Loewe
